Procedures

The Parent Handbook is required reading for all parents and guardians of Discovery School students. Your understanding of the processes and systems that organize and nurture life at the Discovery School will empower you to form a more efficient partnership with us in the best interest of your child. Therefore, we urge parents to read the Handbook carefully and to refer to it frequently throughout the school year.

Should you have any questions about any details outlined in this book, please do not hesitate to ask us. We look forward to working in partnership with parents.

Parent Participation

One question that is commonly asked is: “How do I know what my child is doing, since I don't see grades?” The answer lies in attending “the Journey,” a program where parents are introduced to Montessori methods. This is a great way to understand how children learn, and we strongly urge new parents to sign up for the Journey, which usually takes place in September. In addition, parent/teacher meetings are routinely held, and adhoc meetings can be arranged at the parents’ request.

How can I help?

A private school cannot be successful without the parents’ commitment. A successful Montessori program is a community effort. Parents volunteer in many ways. Below are some examples.

The Committees

Parents also serve on various work committees which are organized by the board. Among them are the Finance Committee, the Building & Grounds Committee, the Public Relations Committee, and the Parent Participation Committee. The latter meets at least once a month to discuss school fundraising and special events with teachers and staff.

Room Parents

Each classroom has room parents whose purpose is to help out in the classroom, on field trips, with gardening, and to work with teachers by preparing materials. Room parents also play an important part in keeping communication open with other parents.
